At least 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
